Problem Description: There is no mechanism in the Server Updates Updates feature to decline (hide, or ignore) updates that don't apply.  

Steps to Reproduce: Login to admin, go to server update, choose check for updates on a Windows computer, click Check for Updates

Actual Result: Update 13 is offered to be installed on a Windows version of ColdFusion 10 with Update 12 already installed

Expected Result: Update program should not offer this update since it only applies to OS X Mavericks

Any Workarounds: Don't run updater

+1. Updates should also not always be cumulative... ppl should only *ever* have to install fixes that address specific issues they are having, not simply apply all updates (which come with increased regression-testing burden). -- Adam

Updates are usually not OS specific. The update 13 was more of an exception and therefore we don't want to take it up. For such cases, we put a clear message in the update description and as an administrator you can choose to ignore an update if you don't need it.

Well that's bloody stupid, isn't it Rupesh? As updates are cumulative (which is another cock-up in this system), the only way one can "ignore" (for example) Update 13 is to *never again update*. -- Adam

Cumulative updates have simplified things for everyone. For the customers - as they clearly know which update they are on, for support - so that they can quickly understand the environment of the customer and for the engineering team - so that we don't have to release the same fix for various updates. If every fix is a separate one, you don't know what kind of nightmare would it be for us and for the customers. Imagine a fix going on top of 5 other fixes and then set of instruction that would need to go along with it. And can you explain why you can never update again if you decided to skip update 13 once? When update 14 comes, you go to that directly. Yes, you will get the fix for OS X Maverics issue as well with that but then that is not going to impact your installation anyways. The files in which these fixes are, would have been anyway there as part of your installation.

Rupesh Kumar, I'm not arguing against cumulative updates, but there are cases such as Update 13 where they do not appear to be cumulative for all customers and products. Shouldn't Update 13 been released as an Hotfix or Manditory Update just for OS X Maverics users, if that's all the update applies to? Otherwise if there are cumulative updates included in Update 13 that apply to Windows users, how do we get them? Should I open a new bug or design feature request for CF 11 beta to allow the ability to ignore updates?

Mandatory update was an exception since it could not have been delivered through the hotfix update vehicle. Hotfix update mechanism is the only vehicle that will be used to notify/deliver the update. I am sure you also understand that ColdFusion is java based and the code base is same for all the platforms. If the change is in a platform specific library like a .bat, .sh, .dll or .so file etc, the update mechanism is smart enough to lay down only the relevant files. But if the change is in the common code base, you will get it and it would not harm your server. If you want to skip an update, go ahead and skip it. I dont see an issue in that. If we extend this argument of ignoring update , one can very well argue that he/she does not need the fix for other bugs and only wants to apply fix for one particular bug. That will not be manageable and would basically mean that we abandon this vehicle and go back to the manual installation and management of hotfixes. We would not like to drop this vehicle and go back to the mess of having individual hotfixes for each bug separately. But if the community seriously wants us to drop this feature, let us know.
